(Elizabeth Williams via AP, File)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Mexico\u2019s government is reviewing a petition by&nbsp;<span class=\"LinkEnhancement\"><a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/sinaloa-cartel-drug-kingpin-arrested-zambada-e9be141a1604b7965844d9aa6e2e70ad\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\">Ismael \u201cEl Mayo\u201d Zambada<\/a><\/span>, a longtime leader of the Sinaloa cartel who is jailed in the United States, to be returned to Mexico for trial, President Claudia Sheinbaum said Friday.<\/p>\n<p>The president confirmed Mexico\u2019s consulate in New York had received the request.<\/p>\n<p>Sheinbaum noted that Mexico\u2019s attorney general was already investigating the circumstances of how Zambada was&nbsp;<span class=\"LinkEnhancement\"><a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/mexico-drug-lord-captured-mayo-zambada-092bb02d8116fe462b6e1340547a4c77\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\">arrested in the U.S. with another Sinaloa cartel leader<\/a><\/span>&nbsp;by authorities near El Paso, Texas in July. He is awaiting trial.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo one is defending this person,\u201d Sheinbaum said. \u201cBeyond the person and his crimes \u2026 the issue is how he was detained.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Zambada has&nbsp;<span class=\"LinkEnhancement\"><a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/mexico-el-mayo-zambada-letter-sinaloa-cartel-fa47408be4329708f429fab200f8f0f0\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\">maintained that he was kidnapped<\/a><\/span>&nbsp;by Joaqu\u00edn Guzm\u00e1n L\u00f3pez, one of the sons of former cartel leader Joaqu\u00edn \u201cEl Chapo\u201d Guzm\u00e1n, and flown to the United States. The Mexican government shortly after said it was opening an investigation of possible treason against those involved in turning over a Mexican citizen to foreign agents.<\/p>\n<div class=\"SovrnAd Advertisement sovrn-story-feed proper-dynamic-insertion\" data-module=\"\" data-class=\"sovrn-story-feed\" data-delayadinsertion=\"\" data-ad-position=\"3\">\n<p>Guzm\u00e1n L\u00f3pez was also arrested by U.S. authorities on arrival in Texas.<\/p>\n<p>In his request, Zambada argued that the legality of his entering the United States has not been verified and asked that he instead be tried in Mexico, according to a report in Mexico\u2019s Reforma newspaper Friday.<\/p>\n<p>He also asked the Mexican government to intervene so that the death penalty is not a possibility in his case, the report said.<\/p>\n<p>In January, U.S. prosecutors said they were&nbsp;<span class=\"LinkEnhancement\"><a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/ismael-zambada-mexico-sinaloa-cartel-c21391bda4fec2df68834f56e6d68031\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\">discussing a possible plea deal with Zambada<\/a><\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>Zambada is one of the most notorious drug traffickers in the world and a leader of the powerful Sinaloa cartel for decades alongside \u201cEl Chapo.\u201d He is known for running the cartel\u2019s smuggling operations while keeping a lower profile.<\/p>\n<p>Mexico could ask that the death penalty not be on the table for Zambada\u2019s case since there is no death penalty in Mexico, but normally the U.S. only repatriates convicted criminals after they serve their sentences.<\/p>\n<div class=\"Page-content\">\n<div class=\"Page-twoColumn\"><main class=\"Page-main\" data-module=\"\" data-padding=\"none\"><\/p>\n<div class=\"Page-storyBody gtmMainScrollContent\">\n<div class=\"RichTextStoryBody RichTextBody\">\n<p>An exception came in November 2020 during the first administration of President Donald Trump. Drug trafficking charges against Mexico\u2019s former Defense Secretary Gen. Salvador Cienfuegos were dropped after Mexico protested his arrest in Los Angeles.
