The protests are fueled by accusations that Attorney General Consuelo Porras has tried to prevent President-elect Bernardo Ar\u00e9valo from taking office in January.<\/p>\n<p>Since&nbsp;<span class=\"LinkEnhancement\"><a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/guatemala-election-bernardo-arevalo-sandra-torres-7712a36b6607c7ae46961818f2703c98\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">emerging as a political contender earlier this year<\/a><\/span>, Ar\u00e9valo \u2013 a progressive outsider challenging the elite who have long controlled the Central American nation \u2013 and his Seed Movement party have faced waves of legal attacks. Those only ramped up when he won the country\u2019s elections in August.<\/p>\n<div class=\"SovrnAd Advertisement sovrn-story-feed proper-dynamic-insertion\" data-module=\"\">\n<div class=\"proper-ad-unit\">The attacks have included&nbsp;<span class=\"LinkEnhancement\"><a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/guatemala-arevalo-elections-standoff-4950f85160c5354f9610a8282dc22e94\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">raids on electoral facilities<\/a><\/span>&nbsp;and the suspension of Ar\u00e9valo\u2019s political party, effectively handicapping his ability to govern.<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>Such moves against the incoming leader prompted Indigenous groups and rural-dwellers \u2013 long disenfranchised in Guatemalan society \u2013 to call for an indefinite strike, which began with 14 blockades. Now two weeks into protests, the blockades have since expanded to block more than 80 roads throughout the country.<\/p>\n<p>In a video released Monday morning, Porras described the demonstrations against her as \u201cillegal\u201d, and asked for authorities to forcibly clear the blocked roads and allow for the free circulation of people once again.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI want to express my complete disagreement and distaste\u201d of the protests, she said, adding that they \u201cclearly violate the rights of all Guatemalans.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Demonstrators have largely been peaceful, but her message comes after a handful of incidents over the weekend.
