{"id":8239,"date":"2023-08-31T11:13:57","date_gmt":"2023-08-31T15:13:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/latinamericasecurityreport.com\/?p=8239"},"modified":"2023-08-31T11:13:57","modified_gmt":"2023-08-31T15:13:57","slug":"3-arrested-in-dominican-republic-as-part-of-investigation-into-explosion-that-killed-34","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/latinamericasecurityreport.com\/?p=8239","title":{"rendered":"3 Arrested in Dominican Republic as Part of Investigation into Explosion That Killed 34"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/dims.apnews.com\/dims4\/default\/26c93a4\/2147483647\/strip\/true\/crop\/6016x4016+0+0\/resize\/1440x961!\/format\/webp\/quality\/90\/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fassets.apnews.com%2F7a%2F80%2F6332a8f3bfefd05dacdad16069f1%2Ff14a89cd1a6d4c57860120375c4ad5b8\" width=\"1440\" height=\"961\"><\/p>\n<p>Three people were arrested Wednesday in the Dominican Republic as part of an ongoing investigation into&nbsp;<span class=\"LinkEnhancement\"><a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/dominican-republic-explosion-dead-missing-cc1b8f3ae5e1bb0c64d80db1fd096ba1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a powerful explosion at a plastics company<\/a><\/span>&nbsp;that killed at least 34 people earlier this month.<\/p>\n<p>Those arrested include the owner of the company and his wife, a government official who was not authorized to speak to the media told The Associated Press.<\/p>\n<p>The explosion was caused by an accumulation of highly flammable gases that could have been generated by the plastics and organic peroxide material stored at the company, according to a preliminary report by the firefighting department obtained by the AP.<\/p>\n<div class=\"Page-storyBody gtmMainScrollContent\">\n<div class=\"RichTextStoryBody RichTextBody\">\n<p>The company, Vidal Plast, recycles, sells and buys plastic material.<\/p>\n<p>Authorities previously said&nbsp;<span class=\"LinkEnhancement\"><a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/dominican-republic-explosion-59e13646f0ead44d3776d532c01790b0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">they have evidence<\/a><\/span>&nbsp;that there was a fire at the business in March caused by a spark and a chemical substance, and that the company did not take any measures \u201cdespite knowing the high risk of its operations.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Norberto Rond\u00f3n, the attorney of those arrested, told reporters Wednesday that the company had been shuttered since May and accused the country\u2019s firefighting department of issuing a preliminary report of \u201clies and half-truths.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It is the first time someone is arrested in the case, with authorities&nbsp;<span class=\"LinkEnhancement\"><a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/dominican-republic-explosion-victims-identifying-b5e8ee77749c5bd387613bcb109cbdd1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">still identifying victims<\/a><\/span>, while another 60 people are recovering from injuries.<\/p>\n<p>The Aug. 14 explosion occurred in a bustling commercial center in the city of San Cristobal, just west of the capital, Santo Domingo.
