(AP Photo\/Marco Ugarte, File)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Mexican politician Andr\u00e9s Manuel L\u00f3pez Beltr\u00e1n, the son of&nbsp;<span class=\"LinkEnhancement\"><a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/mexico-lopez-obrador-amlo-legacy-55df42c3ebaea69ca2df1d3ccbfe6205\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\">former President Andr\u00e9s Manuel L\u00f3pez Obrador<\/a><\/span>, said the United States revoked his visa, prompting an appeal to U.S. President Donald Trump and criticism Friday from Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum, who called the decision \u201cessentially political in nature.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>L\u00f3pez Beltr\u00e1n announced the visa revocation in a letter to Trump posted on Instagram on Thursday, saying&nbsp;<span class=\"LinkEnhancement\"><a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/hub\/marco-rubio\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\">U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio<\/a><\/span>&nbsp;and Under Secretary Christopher Landau \u201cordered the withdrawal of my permission to enter the United States,\u201d despite having \u201cno evidence against me regarding any immoral or criminal act.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The U.S. government has not publicly disclosed the reason for the visa revocation, and it was not clear from L\u00f3pez Beltr\u00e1n\u2019s post what kind of a visa was revoked.<\/p>\n<p>A U.S. Embassy spokesperson in Mexico, who spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss the case publicly, told The Associated Press on Friday that visa records are confidential under U.S. law and declined to comment on the individual case.<\/p>\n<p>Washington\u2019s decision comes less than four months after another setback for Mexico\u2019s ruling party, Morena, when federal prosecutors in New York brought&nbsp;<span class=\"LinkEnhancement\"><a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/mexican-drugs-sinaloa-cartel-3313a6ca22d651df07ea8481dde71771\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\">a case against 10 current and former Mexican officials<\/a><\/span>, including Sinaloa Gov. Rub\u00e9n Rocha Moya of the ruling party, over alleged links to drug trafficking.<\/p>\n<p>Addressing the visa revocations of Mexican politicians at her morning news conference Friday, Sheinbaum urged the United States to provide evidence of any allegations against them but said the issue would not lead to a conflict with Washington.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAll we ask for is respect,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>L\u00f3pez Beltr\u00e1n \u2014 known as Andy \u2014 was one of his father\u2019s closest aides before his 2018 presidential victory. Local media reported that he managed his father\u2019s private schedule and oversaw Morena\u2019s activities in Mexico City and the neighboring State of Mexico.<\/p>\n<p>For much of L\u00f3pez Obrador\u2019s six-year presidency, from 2018 to 2024, L\u00f3pez Beltr\u00e1n, the second of his four children, stayed out of party politics and focused on a chocolate business.
